A few weeks ago, my teen daughter and her friends went on a trip to the beach. Now, I want my daughter to have tons of fun, but I also worry. What if she were to get hurt or injured? She didn’t, thankfully, and she came back with some great memories. As parents, we want what’s best for our children, so it’s best to be prepared for the “just in case.” That is why supplemental insurance is so important.
What Is Supplemental Insurance?
Supplemental insurances can save you high out-of-pocket expenses in cases of accident, cancer or critical illness by covering costs that medical insurance simply isn’t designed to cover. These things might include groceries, parking costs, child care and more. Let’s face it, there is way more cost involved in health situations than just that medical costs.
According to the National Safety Council, the total cost of unintentional injuries in 2011 was $753 billion.
According to Bankrate.com, a recent study shows that if someone encounters a significant, unexpected expense, such as an emergency room visit, only 38 percent of respondents indicated they could cover it with cash they have on hand in a savings account or checking account.
What Type Of Accidents Do I Need To Protect Against?
I used a car accident or anything that might happen to my daughter while we are apart as an example. However, there are so many more accidents that we need to prepare for. Kids play all kinds of sports in the summer. And 2.6 million children will end up in an emergency room thanks to a sports related injury this year. It’s really easy to prepare for an accident so that it doesn’t become a financial burden on the family. It can just be another story to tell at the next family reunion.

I did not know this until now. Truly, the medical insurance does not cover all expenses.
I thankfully have stayed pretty safe and healthy during vacations but it is great to know that you can get supplemental insurance. It would provide such an ease of mind, especially when my boys are old enough to travel without me.
We actually have our supplemental insurance through Aflac and it really came in handy when my husband was out of work for a month with a shoulder injury.

Thank you for highlighting the important of having accident coverage! I think most accidents can be prevented, but there are some that are simply accidents! It is always good to know and fully understand in advance what is and what is not covered! Many people get what they pay for and when they have an accident and something is not covered is the time they think they should have paid more!

It’s so important to be prepared by having insurance just in case. The unfortunate reality is that even though we never expect these things to happen it’s better to be prepared.

I have friends that use AFLAC for their insurance. They have great things to say about the company.
I wish that I had Aflac when I got laid off. It might have helped me get disability. Accidents happen and it’s good to be protected. You can’t put a price on safety.

How awesome! I would love to take off in a helicopter one day. We live on the lake and so many of the lake peeps have their own helicopter with a lake helicopter pad!

Aflac is such a great plan to supplement regular health insurance. You never know what kind of expenses will come up when the unexpected happens.
I’m so thankful in Canada our medical is covered, but this is perfect for those in the US and places that aren’t. It’s so important to be prepared for anything. I love the Aflac commercials. We don’t have Aflac in Canada but we see the commercials often

So much insurance these days! I understand that you cannot have enough but the terms and such can be a bit overwhelming.

Kudos to you for flying in a helicopter! I have a huge fear of heights and I just could not get myself in there.
The piece of mind coverage like this gives you cannot really be described. If you have a large rainy day fund, you might not need it, but most people don’t have the luxury to keep 3-6 months funds in the bank.
And even if you do have that cushion, it would really stink to have to use it to cover what insurance could have.
