Who doesn’t want to wake up to the aroma of a tasty, already made, breakfast? I know I do. I have made breakfast recipes in the slow cooker before, like this easy 5 Ingredient Slow Cooker Casserole, but I was not aware that you could prepare grits in the slow cooker until recently. We have tried this recipe a few times now and it has turned out perfectly each time. For this recipe, you need to be sure to get stone-ground grits as not all grits are equal. We were able to find ours at the Pee Dee State Farmer’s Market on our recent trip to Florence, S.C.
Slow Cooker Overnight Grits Recipe
You Will Need…
3.5 qt slow cooker {or you can use one that is slightly smaller, not bigger}
4 cups water
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup stone-ground grits
To Prepare…
1. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring water and salt to a boil.
2. Add grits, gradually, until fully blended and smooth.
3. Add to the slow cooker. If you don’t use a slow cooker liner, we recommend greasing the sides.
4. Cook on low for 8 hours.
*As this recipe can stick to the slow cooker, we recommend you use a Debbie Meyer Slow Cooker Liner for easier cleanup.
There are several ways that you can serve grits. I like mine with a little butter and some salt and pepper {as pictured}. Jay likes his with sugar and milk. Why he would want to ruin a perfectly good bowl of grits like that is beyond me, lol. I have also had grits in restaurants with anything from cheese to chicken broth as ingredients. However you like them, grits are very versatile, filling and a staple in Southern cooking. Enjoy. 🙂

I’ll have to show this to my parents. My husband and I don’t eat grits but if we did this would make breakfast one step quicker.

Mmmmm I love grits, but they are difficult to find up here around New York City. I make it a point to order them whenever I travel south. While I haven’t tried to make them at home myself yet, I feel like this recipe is easy enough that I can give it a try – thank you!
