Most girls dream of a beautiful wedding. But let’s be real here – they can be quite expensive. I am one of those people that thinks that you can have most anything that you want in life if you budget and plan, though. So, if you are planning an upcoming wedding but you want to do it as cost effectively as possible, you will want to read what we have to share with you about Light In The Box and their frugal wedding dress ideas.
What Is Light In The Box
Light In The Box is a clothing site that allows you to shop globally so that you can get the best prices possible. Have you seen Here Comes Honey Boo Boo? Can you believe that it only costed $212! If you didn’t see this episode, check out the video below so that you can see her gorgeous, frugal wedding dress.
11 Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding
1. Have The Wedding At Your House – Have a beautiful yard? Use it. Save that money that you would have used on rent for other things.
2. Search Craigslist – Need help setting the wedding up? Perhaps you could hire some cheap day labor help for a fraction of what it would cost for a professional service.
3. Search Craigslist Again – You might be able to find people willing to trade things that you need for the wedding. For instance, you might be able to find the decorations that you need for your reception all for trade.
4. Have A Friend Make Your Cake – Why do you have to have an extravagant cake? Have a friend who loves baking? Ask them to make you a cake as a wedding gift.
5. Only Invite Those Closest To You – Not everyone can throw an extravagant affair and most people understand this. Just invite a small group of people who are closest to you.
6. Make Your Own Decorations – If you are a crafty person or have crafty friends, then you could probably save a ton if you made your own flower arrangements and other decorations.
7. Do Your Own Hair And Makeup – Why pay for this if you are great at doing your own hair and makeup or have a friend who is. If not, go to a local Cosmetology school. You can often times get your hair and makeup done there for far less than the price of the salon.
8. Don’t Get Married On Saturday – Weekend weddings are highly sought after, thus they come with a premium price. However, not everyone works Monday – Friday. If you can make a weekday wedding work for you, then you could save a lot on a nice venue.
9. Have A Potluck Reception – Have your family bring a dish to your wedding instead of a gift. Seriously. How many can openers does one person need?
10. Provide Disposable Cameras To Guests – Hire a professional photographer for the wedding if you like, but also provide disposable cameras to guests for the reception and have them be your photographers. Then leave a basket they can drop them in as they leave and you can develop them when you like.
11. Buy A Frugal Wedding Dress – You don’t have to pay thousands for a wedding dress to have a great time or to look fabulous. Get yourself a beautiful, frugal wedding dress. After all, when will you wear it again?
If Only I Had Known Where To Find A Frugal Wedding Dress…
My husband and I went to the courthouse to get married. Why? Well, a major reason as far as I was concerned was the cost of a wedding. I just cant see paying thousands of dollars for a dress I would only wear once. That’s great for those of you that like that sort of thing, but I was never one of those little girls who dreamed of having some big fancy schmancy wedding. It’s just not my style.
I would rather save money by buying a frugal wedding dress so that I can spend my money on other things – like the honeymoon that we took to Myrtle Beach. However, if I had known that I could have gotten a dress this pretty for $212, then I totally would have been a lot more interested in an actual wedding.

My sister got married last year and spent over $1000 on her dress – and then just threw it away because she couldn’t be bothered to sell it or box it up. What a waste of money!
I love that you can find such a big range of affordable wedding dresses and accessories at Light In The Box- and the fact I can even find coupon codes to stretch my savings? Amazing!
I don’t plan on getting married again BUT I wish this had been an option for me when I did get married. I refused to spend a lot of money on a wedding, so we just got married by a justice of the peace. I wish I’d had some kind of wedding, but the money was such a factor!
I bought my wedding dress off ebay! It was totally a random place to find a dress, but it was a major score just $50!
Wow who knew you could save so much money! I spent a fortune on mine (or rather had Hubs spend a fortune hahaha).
These are really great tips! I totally agree on saving money to use on experiences like a honeymoon to remember.
I feel the same way about a dress – mine only cost $75 and then I donated it to the local summer stock theatre. I saw it on stage one time when I went to a show. That was wild. My cake was a gift just as you suggest. It was delicious!
Oh wow! I bet that was cool seeing your dress on stage. What a great idea!

My daughter got married this year and we had the wedding at my brother in law’s barn. We had to clean it out, as it’s a working barn, but it was beautiful! It took my daughter forever to find a frugal wedding dress. I wish we had checked out Lightinthebox to save some hassle!
I have never been to a wedding in a barn but I have sen pictures of some online and they were all gorgeous!
Well, kind of…because I still need wedding pics with a gown since we only had a civil wedding.
Those are awesome tips. I spent way too much on my wedding and now that my sister is getting married I have been helping her. I will definitely be sharing this with her
Great list and it’s funny, but I just got married in July, my reception in August (less than a week ago) and we did #4-9.
The 1st go round, I went the extreme cheap route… JP at the courthouse and Denny’s after LOL
The 2nd time I did it up big! We live in Vegas… go big or go home, right? ๐
These are great tips. If you’re not careful, your wedding can be the biggest expense of your life!
I followed several of these tips. I tried to be really thoughtful about what I spent and how much I spent. I wanted to enjoy my wedding, not worry about how much it was costing me.
Weddings can get really pricey really fast. These are great tips. You’ve got to be careful when you’re planning your special day, or it will be especially expensive!
Wow! Love the dress and everything about the photo! Absolutely gorgeous. I will definitely pass on this link to my girlfriend whose daughter is getting married. Heading there now.
We had a very small wedding budget and it was fine. My husband and I look back on that as a really special day and we’re glad we didn’t overspend. It’s great that these dresses are so affordably priced.
I admit I spent more on my dress than I wanted but we did everything else ourselves except for the cake. It was one of those situations that it was the first one I tried on and didn’t need an alteration one. Would have loved to find one for the prices that Light In The Box offers.
Her dress was stunning in that episode!
These are such great tips! We lucked out with my dress, it was under $300.
There’s no sense in going all out for one day. These are great tips.
I’m definitely not in the school of thought where you should spend a fortune for a wedding. I’m all for cutting costs.

My family and I made many of our own decorations. It was inexpensive and a fun way to spend some time together.
That is definitely a good point. Instead of being Bridezilla worrying about a caterer, flowers, the crazy expensive dress, etc., you could relax with your family while making decorations and doing other fun things.
I was lucky enough to have a free church and free clergy. We also made all our decorations and the food was all made by my hubby’s aunt as a gift.
My wedding was more than I’d like to admit. I would totally do it on the cheap now if I had another chance!
I never had a wedding, but I did wear a wedding dress on my wedding day! It was a $400 ABS Allen Schwartz wedding dress that I bought for $15 at a thrift store. Best of all, it was just like new!
Great tips on saving money on your wedding day. it can be crazy expensive.
Those are some really great tips! We didn’t spend much at our wedding.
i wish i could have had a dress when i got married, but i wore fancy maternity clothes instead…
I love the idea of a potluck reception. I think it would save so much money if that became trendy! And a lot of new couples could really use the help saving money (if they’re paying for their own wedding, which seems to be more and more of the norm).
Right, and with pot luck, everyone that brings a dish should at least rest assured they will like at least one dish. ๐
The list is really of a great help for those who are planning to get married.
Actually, we’re planning to do the DIY venue styling for my brother’s wedding this December. ๐
