The Phone Rings In The Middle Of The Night #moreclassywriting

Phone Rings In The Middle Of The Night ~

306/365 - 11/02/11 - Phone Call

“The phone rings in the middle of the night…”  That little phrase was part of one of the most popular songs of the 1980s. We are talking, of course, about Cyndi Lauper’s smash hit from 1983, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” However, the phone ringing in the middle of the night can also be quite scary {insert evil laugh here}.

The Phone Rings In The Middle Of The Night: And Scares The **** Out Of Me!

I can remember a few years back, when I was working first shift, I had gone to bed around 10 p.m. (that was my normal bedtime). I was awakened suddenly by the sound of the phone ringing at about 1 a.m. Any amount of thoughts went through my head as I reached for the phone. At this time I was still single and had not yet met Dawn, so my first thoughts were of my parents, who are getting up there in years. “Oh no!” I thought, “Something has happened to one of them!”

Last call [explored] :)

Anyway, my heart was racing as I grabbed the phone. You could imagine the annoyance that I felt when I answered to discover some teenager on the other end who said he had dialed the wrong number. Sure he had. But, still, getting a phone call in the middle of the night can surely upset you before you know who it is on the other end of the line. It just always seems to mean trouble.

Do You Remember Rotary Phones?

apart

This all occurred well before I had a cell phone, of course, and land lines were what you had if you had a phone. You remember land lines, don’t you? Ooh, for real fun, how many of you remember rotary phones, with the little round holes for your fingers that you had to push all the way around the dial? I remember the one that my grandmother had for years and years.

SCREAM

And perhaps the most important thing of all to remember when you get a call in the middle of the night – if you get a phone call and when you answer the voice on the other end of the phone says “What’s your favorite scary movie?” it might be time to hang up and call the police!

We’ve had those calls in the night – tearing us out of sleep and a safe bed. They are scary. If you’ve seen How I Met Your Mother they even announce that “nothing good happens after 2 am.” If it’s night and someone needs to tell you something that bad, you are just sure it’s bad news. Good luck getting some better nights sleep.

I take the phone off the hook at night, or leave the answering machine on, and turn the ringer off. First, I am not a doctor and cannot help to cure anyone who is hurt. I also cannot raise the dead. And, I’d rather remember whoever the phone call would be about as alive and well, rather than running to hospital to “say goodbye”. Of course, when my daughter was younger and lived at home, I had to keep the phone on until she came home. But now? I can wait until the morning to hear bad news.

I agree. I can’t really help someone who is on their death bed. I have started turning my phone off, or at least down, at night now, too.

Yes I think we all have received phone calls be they good or bad in the middle of the night. My first concern is if I dont answer if maybe a family member was hurt or something. Tho Im sure we all have pulled the phone pranks as kids at sometime or other. And I always look at the clock before I answer the phone . If Im really tired or sick I sometime turn the phone off till morning
