Scary Movies ~
First off, I am a total adrenaline junkie. I love to get scared and get my heart beating fast! The best way to do that is to turn off all the lights when the sun goes down, and turn on a horror film. With Halloween coming, this is the perfect time to get your scare on! But, what movies are actually scary? And which “scary movies” are really just a joke?
Personally, I will always have my favorite scary movies. Usually I tend to lean towards the classics. I mean, they only stand the test of time if they are good, right? Here are my opinions on the best and worst scary movies. See if you agree.
The Best and Worst Scary Movies
Nightmare on Elm Street {the original series} and Friday the Thirteenth are some of the best scary movies ever. When the directors and writers made these movies, they knew exactly what they were doing. They perfectly designed the movies to keep you on edge the whole time while watching. Sure, special effects are better now, but a scary movie isn’t all about the effects. It’s also about the anticipation and suspense. These movies had it right.
Usually, I am not a fan of movie remakes! For instance, I think the remake of the old Nightmare on Elm Street is a complete joke! Freddy looks silly and in no way scary! I would even compare his looks to that of the lion in Wizard of Oz! In contrast to this, I actually did enjoy the new Friday the Thirteenth! They did an excellent job of recreating the old classic and turning it into something new and brilliant. Perhaps most importantly, they kept the main character, Jason, looking like the original one. The movie makers also seemed to follow the story line pretty well. They used new technology to create more believable and realistic kills and deaths; making the movie that much more exciting!
Now, on to the next subject… the scary movies that suck! A “scary movie” I watched recently was Paranormal Activity. In no way did I find this movie scary. Sure there was one part in the end that has a pop-up and it makes you jump a bit, but the rest is a joke – hardly worth sitting through for the one minorly scary part. It keeps you thinking that something scary or even remotely thrilling is about to happen, and then it doesn’t. In the commercials for this movie, they made it seem like this movie was going to be super scary, I couldn’t have been more disappointed. ZZZzzzzzZZZZzzzzz. Snooze fest.
The lastest movie that I have seen that I found was really good and scary would have to be Insidious. It was great! I couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. Usually I am not a fan of movies that just use pop-ups to scare you, but this one contained that and much more. The story line was great, also.

Dawn thinks that Blair Witch Project and The Ring both stunk. I agree. In Blair Witch Project, we were promised terrifying nightmares. All we got were extreme snot close ups. And The Ring was just stupid.
Dawn felt that Saw and Final Destination had scary parts and would be her pick for the scariest of the newer terror-promising gore fests. In Saw the victims get decisions. Decisions, decisions. Of course few are ever right.
And finally, one of the best franchises of all – Scream. Though sometimes it is humorous, it still has a decent story with lots of cool characters and it never fails to entertain. Plus, the killer{s} changes in each movie which ups the suspense ante!
I love what you wrote about the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. That’s exactly what I said after watching it that it’s a complete joke! I agree Freddy looks extremely silly. I hate the way they messed with the storyline. They turned Freddy into a child molestor. He wasn’t even scary then, just sick. It was nothing like the original. But then again, I think the biggest reason it was such a fail is because you absolutely can’t remake Nightmare on Elm Street without Robert Englund. Freddy has his own personality unlike Jason Vorhees, Jason didn’t talk. Robert played Freddy’s personality very well. So I think anyone can play the role of Jason Vorhees but not of Freddy, only Robert Englund can play Freddy. I love the original Friday the 13th but I agree that the remake was also good. Thank you for the review, I enjoyed this! It seems like we have the same taste as far as horror movies go. I also didn’t like Paranormal Activity, The Ring, or The Blair Witch Project and I loved Scream and Insidious.
If you also like horror that isn’t so mainstream, I suggest The Caller and The Collector.

Sleepaway Camp by far is the best of the worst.
yeah, I’m officially freaked out just by your pictures. lol. I don’t watch scary movies. Even Witches is pushing it for me; and that’s a favorite Halloween movie in our family. I will stick with “The walking Dead” tv series if I want a good fright. I’ll leave the scary to you. lol.
I am such a scaredy cat I could hardly read this post! I HATE those pics!! My least favorite pics that had terrified me forever (and I don’t watch these kinds of movies anymore): Children of the Corn, Poltergeist, The Exorcist.

I’m a wimp, I hate scary movies! As a kid, I may have seen parts of the Halloween series. I prefer thrillers to horror.
The Shining and It are my 2nd scary movies I can’t watch!

I got roped in to seeing “The Ring” Years ago when it first came out
and I am still working to where I can get it out of my head.

I have to agree about Insidious and the Blair Witch Project…really bad. However, I really enjoyed all the Paranormal Activity movies and think they have gotten better each time. So I have high hopes on Paranormal Activity 4.
Great post, but scary movies freak me out. They can be fun though! The Shining? Forget it. Rosemary’s Baby – aakk! I’d rather watch Elf or Tommy Boy any day. 😉

The movie Chuckie is pretty scary but hard to think of it as scary since it revolves around a child’s toy. I don’t think I’d classify it as the worst, but certainly not the best lol I think the first few Friday the 13th were pretty scary but then it just got old, ok kill a few campers or whatever the setting is, then kill HIM but wait HE’s NOT DEAD!… lol predictable, haha
i think i have only seen a couple of these, for i am a scaredy cat LOLL the blair witch project freaked me out and that paranormal activity Oh my i kept looking around for days LOLL

I love Nightmare on Elm Street, and hated the remake. I am not a big remake fan, but the Halloween ones were really good.
I like J-horror a lot, and they redo it a lot here. I like the orignals of those they are much better at the suspense.
Paranormal Activity I do want to see this last one, but once I see one I feel like I have to see them all.
I did not like Blair Witch at all..I wanted to see what they were seeing not all the jerking camera movements.
Other awful one was Cloverfield..this poor camera guy is trying to rescue some random chick his buddy likes, who may or may not be in her apartment.
You’re right, Cloverfield stunk! I thought that was going to be good, too. I was so disappointed. And I hate all the new movies with the shaky camera thing. It makes me sick to my stomach. Why on Earth would anyone think that is cool? lol.

The whole movie I’m “Leave her!” And then I don’t quite get what the things really were. I hate when they don’t show us or a movie that’s super dark I can’t see anything.
Blair Witch was supposed to be soooo good..it was not!

While some of the newer horror movies I enjoy, the classics are the best. It’s the time of year for them, too. Every year on Halloween we watch the original Halloween. You can’t beat it! Nightmare on Elm Street and When A Stranger Calls are also must sees – the original versions, of course. I do like Scream and the twists of Final Destination, too.
