The grilled cheese sandwich has become an American classic. Just like baseball and hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches have become a part of the American culture. However, lots of people think that to make a grilled cheese sandwich you only have to slap a slice of cheese between two pieces of bread and grill it. Eeek! There is a proper way to make a grilled cheese sandwich, people! An art, if you will.
What Goes Into Making The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
The grilled cheese sandwich has arguably been around since the Roman Empire, but it is believed that the modern day grilled cheese sandwich started in the 1920s. Either way, it is a huge part of American life, basically because it is cheap, quick and delicious. Now, that’s my type of meal! And the first step in making the perfect grilled cheese sandwich is choosing the right cheeses {yes, plural} and bread. We prefer Swiss Cheese, White American Cheese and Roman Meal Bread.
Anyway, as I said earlier, there is a proper technique to make a grilled cheese sandwich, and it is NOT putting a slice of cheese between two slices of bread and grilling it {or microwaving it}. If that’s your idea, then you are missing out on sooo much flavor. There are hundreds of different recipes and variations on the grilled cheese sandwich, but I will share my own personal recipe with you here, which we call the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. To make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, you will need:
How To Make The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
You will need…
2 slices of Roman Meal bread
1/2 tablespoon of butter
2 slices of white American cheese
1 slice of Swiss cheese (deli slices preferred)
Roman Meal bread is always baked fresh, locally in regional bakeries across the United States to delivering freshly baked bread to your local grocery store.
We like Roman Meal bread because it is made fresh locally. Who doesn’t love fresh? Trust me. You can taste the difference. Roman Mealโs Whole Grains are also a good source for vitamin D, calcium, and fiber! This means that your tasty comfort food doesn’t have to be bad for you anymore.
Preparation…
First, prepare your skillet on the stove top by placing it on a suitable eye just below medium heat. Add the butter to the skillet and allow it to melt and spread throughout the bottom of the skillet.
While the butter is melting, build your sandwich by adding one of the slices of white American cheese to one of the Roman Meal bread slices, then add the slice of Swiss cheese. Next, add the other slice of white American cheese and top it off with the other slice of Roman Meal bread.
When the butter starts to bubble on the skillet, it is ready for grilling. Add the sandwich to the skillet and cover the skillet. If you have a clear lid, this is best. Allow to grill just until the cheese starts to melt (about two minutes). Then, flip the sandwich over and allow it to grill for an additional minute. Remove from the skillet and allow it to cool for about a minute, then enjoy!
There you have it! My recipe for the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. Hope you find it as tasty as we all do here in our household. Enjoy!

I love Swiss cheese on a grilled cheese. I like it alone on rye sometimes. Cheddar is another fave. But I think this combo is awesome too!
That certainly does look like the perfect grilled cheese. I like making these for lunch every once in a while for my kids. I like to make mine is fresh cheddar, so yum!.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup is my favorite meal of all time. A good grilled cheese is heavenly!
I love grilled cheese – I use co-jack cheese. To me it is the perfect sandwich – add tomato soup and I have one of my favorite meals.
I really do love colby jack cheese, too. Really, I can’t think of any cheese that I don’t like.
There’s nothing like a crispy, warm grilled cheese when the weather gets cold out. This looks delicious.
I love grilled cheese. Simple works best for me if there is to be dunking of Tomato soup! Otherwise, I love fancy grilled cheeses with a mixture of cheese. Avocado works well in there too.
I haven’t tried it with avocado, but I really love it. I will have to try that soon. ๐
so cheesy… so classic. I love grilled cheese during any season.
I’m such a fan of grilled cheese. It’s perfect any time of the year, but I love to eat it with a bowl of soup in the winter time too. We love to make grilled ham and cheese sometimes too. Roman Meal bread is the bread I grew up on! My mom always bought it, and we still buy it today!
Grilled cheese is our favorite sandwich. I like mine with tomato and bacon.
That does sound awesome. Cheese and tomato go so well together.
my daughter is crazy over grilled cheese, sometimes hubby will also add bacon and eggs and call it a breakfast sandwich lol.
Oh that is really good. My husband does there here, too, sometimes.
We use Roman Meal bread sometimes. That swiss cheese melting makes me hungry. ๐
This is a great grilled cheese sandwich recipe. I always use more than one slice and kind of cheese. It just makes it so much more delicious.
What a great grilled cheese! I’m going to try this soon. I’ve always just used one type of cheese. It’s good, but it gets boring.
This makes me hungry. I love ordering grilled cheese when there’s a blend of cheeses at restaurants. I’ll have to try it at home ๐
My daughters love grilled cheese. It is a true staple in our home. Thanks for the tips!
There is nothing better than a good grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup! Thank you for letting us know about Roman Meal’s bread!
Grilled cheese is like the perfect fall/winter meal. It’s a go to lunch around here.
Grilled cheese is an art according to my son. He definitely knows a good grilled cheese!
I put one slice of swiss and one of meunster and the american cheese slices in the middle, definitely perfect with soup! ๐
Grilled cheese is 1 of my biggest weakness. I just can’t say no to this!
All this is missing is a big bowl of soup! Perfect!
Yummm! SO cheesy! I would pair this with some tomato soup.
grilled cheese is a staple in our house. this one looks so good
That grilled cheese sandwich looks so good right now. I may have to make one for lunch today.
My son loves grilled cheese sandwiches, but only if it is made with a certain cheese, in a certain way. This looks good and I am sure he would approve
Grilled cheese is my fav sandwich. Must have a side of tomato soup too! ๐
I’ve never used more than one cheese when making a grilled cheese. I need to try this. It looks so good.
I would make chicken or steak pan inis. Paired with a salad, it would be a perfect meal.
Grilled cheese is a fall favorite food for me. I also love both those cheese types but never tried melting them together. Thanks for the idea, I had wondered what you had done to make it look like that. ๐
For me it’s all about timing. The sandwich has to heat up slowly for a satisfying crunch.
That is definitely true. If you start it out too hot, it will just burn and the cheese won’t melt.
I love Roman Meal bread. That grilled cheese sounds and looks amazing!!!
We make grilled cheese at least a few times a week. I add a bit of Feta cheese to mine. I will have to try this recipe out next time i make one. It looks so good.
I love it with grilled ham and swiss on BLT’s and egg salad the bestBut I like to use it for toast and french toast also. Thanks for the chance to win.
Swiss cheese is my favorite on grilled cheese sandwiches. It reminds me of being a kid! We’d have them every payday, as my dad would go to the Amish market down the street and get their Swiss cheese and we’d made grilled cheese from it! I miss that cheese, as where I live it is not available.
Ohhhhh this looks DEVINE. So so so good, I need to make this! Of course id see this when starving:)
I love a great grilled cheese sandwich and this one looks delish!!! I add a little tomato with mine, yum!
Tomato on grilled cheese really is good. My daughter loves to have tomato on hers.
I’m a fan of cheddar grilled cheese myself, but that’s about it.
I cannot even tell you how delicious this looks right now. Yum. I love Grilled Cheese, but I’ve never tried one with anything but Cheddar. I think I’m missing out!
You had me at cheese! LOVE cheese! Your grilled cheese looks delicious!
Oh yum! I love a good cheese sammy, this looks so good and so creamy!!
My favorite sandwich is good bread with sliced leftover roast chicken. But in thinking about what I might make with a loaf of Roman Meal bread, it occurs to me that it’s been a long time since I made French toast, which I absolutely love. Maybe for Sunday breakfast tomorrow!
Man, do I love a good grilled cheese! Also, it’s always better when someone else makes it haha!
You are definitely right about that. I always love the ones my husband makes better than mine. ๐
I love experimenting with my grilled cheese sandwiches! I’ve recently started spreading a little cream cheese on the bread before adding the other cheeses. Gives it a little extra creaminess!
That sounds really good. I will have to try that. ๐
I like it toasted and spread with apple butter. Just like my Dad.
If I win I would really love to try this grilled cheese! I would add tomato of course because I love it that way! Thank you.
Love a good grilled cheese and we indulge in them quite often.
You’re killing me. You are feeding my cheese addiction! Haven’t had a good grilled cheese in ages, this one looks like it would more than hit the spot!
Grilled cheese sandwiches are a staple during the school year in our house (for those who are still homeschooled.) And, you can get great variety by changing up the bread and cheese chosen.
That is so true. You can always make an old favorite new again by just changing an ingredient or two.
This sounds so good, I have the roman meal bread right now and the regular cheese, no swiss here ugh, but I am making it for lunch right now, I did not know to cover my pan with a lid and have never done that will try that now.
Oh yes, worked well and cheese melted perfectly and it is not burned, thank you
I love making grilled cheese sandwiches and these look so easy to make and delicious. I love Roman Meal bread, I have been eating it for years. I will have to try out your recipe soon!
