Tips For Turning Your Bedroom Into A Calming Space

April 6, 2020 by Dawn McAlexander

calming space

Everyone needs a space in which they can fully relax. With the seemingly endless stressors associated with everyday life, being able to unwind and recharge your batteries is crucial to staying sane. While many of us associate our homes with comfort and security, most households aren’t exactly temples of calm. Children, pets and other sources of home-based chaos can make relaxing after a long day an arduous undertaking. Anyone looking to create a calming space in their home can benefit from the following bedroom tips.

Find the Right Mattress

Your bed is the undeniable star of the bedroom. Regardless of what other leisure activities you use this space for, most of us primarily associate bedrooms with sleeping. Since your bedroom’s main function is to serve as a sleeping space, it’s only natural that you’d want the best possible tools for the job. That being the case, take care to invest in a quality luxury mattress and a resilient, aesthetically pleasing bed frame that fits in with the space’s overall décor. Stress, irritability and a general inability to function often stem from poor quality of sleep. You owe it to both yourself and the people around you to get the best night’s rest possible, and the right mattress can prove crucial in this endeavor.

Commit to a Calming Color Scheme

Believe it or not, your choice of color scheme can have a direct impact on your ability to relax in certain spaces. Whereas bold, attention-grabbing colors have a tendency to make people feel on-edge and unable to unwind, peaceful colors can help you feel at ease and calm a racing mind. With this in mind, make sure to put some genuine thought into your new bedroom’s color scheme. Even if this ultimately requires you to repaint the space, the resultant peace of mind should prove well worth your efforts.

If you’re unfamiliar with calming colors, selecting the right color scheme for your bedroom is liable to prove challenging. For example, colors you once believed to be calming may actually have the opposite effect. When shopping around for the right bedroom colors, you’ll be particularly well-served by shades of blue, green and white. Greens and blues, in particular, have been found to be very calming to the eyes. Not only should such colors be applied to wallpaper – but drapes, bedding and other essential bedroom furnishings as well.

Get Serious About Decluttering

It should come as no surprise that cluttered spaces are often difficult to fully relax in. If you see nothing but messes every time you survey a space, it’s hard to focus on anything but how badly those messes need to be cleaned up. While it’s true that not all people are equally bothered by clutter, persistent messiness is liable to take its toll on even the most laidback individual. As such, if you truly want your new bedroom to be a den of relaxation, it’s in your best interest to get serious about decluttering. In fact, when it comes to the overall makeup of your bedroom, you’d do well to adopt a minimalist approach.

Of course, this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t have anything in your bedroom. In addition to your bed and other essential items, there’s nothing wrong with adding a television, some plants and a well-organized bookshelf to the mix. Clutter, on the other hand, should be dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. For example, to ensure that the floor isn’t littered with dirty clothes, invest in a large laundry hamper – preferably, one that meshes with your established color scheme. Furthermore, instead of leaving books, magazines and other reading materials lying around, put your bedroom bookshelf to good use.

Given how much stress the average American contends with on a daily basis, relaxation is a vital part of maintaining good mental health. However, for many of us, taking the time to unwind is easier said than done. Even though our living spaces are meant to represent safe havens from the outside world, people often feel just as stressed in their own homes as they do at work. Luckily, the right bedroom can help you nip this problem in the bud. The previously discussed pointers will prove invaluable in helping you create a bedroom in which you feel truly at ease.
