places to visit in louisiana

Louisiana is a unique cultural and historical center for all the American Races. The state’s architecture and cuisine are influenced by different cultures such as Spanish, European, Caribbean, African and American. You may also get lucky, and experience people express their culture in music, dancing and cultural events along major streets. When it comes to nature, the southern part of the state along the Gulf of Mexico is home to unique features such as swamps and lakes. Below are some of the best places to visit in Louisiana.

7 Places To Visit In Louisiana

Avery Island

Avery Island is a green paradise inhabited with a variety of both plants and animal species. The island is also well known for its Tabasco sauce factory. Visitors can learn more about Tabasco sauce production by making stops at the museum, the factory and their barrel museum. The island has a birds city; which is home to some exotic birds. Some of the birds like egrets were moved to the island for protection. Other animals you can enjoy watching here are alligators and deer.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge

Constructed in 1955 to cut the travel time from the north shore to New Orleans, this 24miles long bridge is number 9 in the top 10 longest bridges in the world. The bridge is made up of a pair of twin bridges that run parallel to each other across the lake. Apart from the bridge, lake Pontchartrain has a lot to offer including a beautiful waterfront and recreation activities such as swimming, boating and fishing.

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is a combination of six sites that spread across southern Louisiana. The park is where you will experience the New Orleans cultural mix. Here you can learn the Cajun tradition in their pure form from the people who lived the cultures. You can also learn about WW1 by walking along the trail where the 1854 battle of New Orleans took place.

Oak Alley Plantation

Located at the banks of the Mississippi River, Oak alley plantation has a rich history about slave labour, as it was a sugarcane plantation that relied on sugarcane farming. The beauty of the plantation is its eye-catching landscaping and the double row of trees that create a shaded canopy at the middle. The onsite restaurants offer traditional culinary delights like the Louisiana oysters and smoked sausages.

Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana and the second-largest city in the state. The major attractions in this city are both the current and former capital and the USS Kidd. The city is also home to several museums such as the LSU Rural Life Museum. This museum gives visitors a picture of life in 19th century Louisiana.

Lafayette

The city of Lafayette is the heart of Cajun and Creole cultures in Louisiana. Visiting Acadian village will allow you to experience pure Cajun culture in the form of architecture and furnishing. There are also other cultural attractions like the Lafayette Science Museum and the Alexandre Mouton House Museum.

Honey Island Swamp

Taking a boat tour around the swamplands of Louisiana is an extreme and thrilling experience. The Honey Island Swamp is the least altered in the swamp, meaning there are a lot of wild animals and plant species to watch. Some of the animals you can catch a glimpse of include alligators, deer and wolves. Louisiana is best known for its cultural diversity, but there are also a lot of natural features to enjoy. Most people visitors end their journey in New Orleans, but there is the whole of Louisiana has a lot to offer.
