13 Tips To Help Keep Your Pets Safe in the Summer

Summertime might be your favorite time of the year thanks to the longer days, ample sun, and abundance of outdoor fun. But it can be difficult for some pets even if they love lounging in a sunny yard as much as you do! From sizzling sidewalks to uninvited pests, here are some tips to help keep your pets safe in the summer.

13 Tips To Help Keep Your Pets Safe in the Summer

1. Hydration Nation

Just like you, your pets need to stay hydrated. But forget those boring water bowls. Think bigger. How about a pet-friendly fountain that keeps the water flowing and fresh all day? Pets love running water for its coolness, making it more appealing for them to drink up and stay hydrated. Plus, it’s fun to watch them play with it!

2. Shade Brigade

We all love a bit of sunbathing, but too much sun can be harmful, especially for your pets. Make sure your outdoor space has plenty of shady spots. No trees? No problem! Set up a stylish pet gazebo or a cooling tent where your pets can lounge safely away from the harsh rays. It’s like their own little VIP section at the summer festival. I’m even thinking about getting a small pool where Marley can take a dip in while I read. That sounds like a wonderful staycation idea to me.

3. Tick and Flea Control

Here’s where things get a bit itchy. Summer is prime time for fleas and ticks, the most pesky of party crashers. Invest in reliable tick control products—spot treatments, collars, or even the latest in tick prevention technology, like smart collars that not only track your pet’s activity but also repel pests. Remember, preventing these bugs is much easier than getting rid of them after they’ve made your pet their summer home.

4. Paws and Reflect

Ever tried walking barefoot on hot pavement? Ouch! Now imagine your pet’s paws on that same pavement. Always check the temperature of sidewalks or any surface before letting your pet walk on them. Consider investing in protective pet booties for those unavoidable hot walks. They might look funny on their first try, but your pet’s paws will thank you.

5. Don’t Overdo the Exercise

We get it, everyone wants to be as active as possible – even Fido. But excessive exercise in the heat can be dangerous. Schedule walks during the cooler parts of the day, typically early morning or late evening. And always carry water, for both you and your pet. If your pet starts to pant heavily or seems lethargic, it’s time to call it a day.

6. Never Leave Pets in the Car

This one can’t be stressed enough. Leaving a pet in a car on a hot day can lead to fatal temperatures within minutes, even with the windows cracked open. If your summer errands aren’t pet-friendly, better to leave them at home, enjoying the AC and their favorite chew toy.

7. Keep the Bugs Out

Summer bugs aren’t just annoying; they can be harmful. Mosquitoes, for instance, can carry heartworm disease. Keep your home and yard bug-proof by eliminating standing water and keeping your grass trimmed. There are also pet-safe yard sprays that can help keep these bugs away from your outdoor lounging areas.

8. Pool Safety

If you’re lucky enough to have a pool, or even if you set up a kiddie pool for your pet, remember not all pets are natural swimmers. Always supervise pets in or around water. Consider a pet life vest for extra safety, especially for breeds that are not known for their swimming skills. It’s like a seatbelt but for water!

9. Watch What They Eat

Barbecue season is tempting for everyone, pets included. Be cautious about what food scraps they might be picking up. Foods like onions, chocolate, avocado, and certain sweeteners like xylitol can be toxic to pets. Keep an eye on those plates left within reach! Check out these great dog friendly recipes instead.

10. Regular Grooming

Summer heat can be tougher on pets with thicker coats. For instance, Marley is a Yorkie Poo and her fur gets long and extremely matted without regular grooming. So, I have her scheduled every 4 weeks, for maintenance and for cooling in the summer, and every 4-6 weeks in the winter. Regular grooming helps remove excess fur and lighten their load, making it easier for them to stay cool. Consider a summer trim for particularly fluffy pets but consult with your vet or a professional groomer to ensure it’s done safely without exposing their skin to sunburn.

11. Cooling Gear

Invest in pet cooling gear like cooling mats, vests, or even bandanas that can be soaked in cold water. These products help in maintaining a lower body temperature, providing comfort during the hottest parts of the day.

12. Monitor for Heat Exhaustion

Learn the signs of heat exhaustion: excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic behavior, and uncoordinated movement are all red flags. If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cooler environment immediately and consult your veterinarian.

13. Safe Travel

If you’re planning a road trip or any travel with your pet, ensure they’re comfortable and safe in the vehicle. Use pet barriers or seat belts designed for pets, provide plenty of water, and never leave your pet unattended in the vehicle.

With these tips, your pets can enjoy the summer just as much as you do—safely!
