Some people love getting behind the wheel. For others, it’s a necessary evil. Most people, like me, fall somewhere between those two extremes; it can be fun, but also, it can be something that you just do on autopilot – or that you have to do – especially when driving in high traffic areas that you might not be accustomed to. If you’re in that boat, then it’s worthwhile looking at ways to subtly increase how much fun you have when you’re going from point A to point B. It’s easy to have a good time in your car when you’re on a summer road trip, but it’s your day-to-day experience that really counts. Here are ten tried and tested tips that’ll help you make driving fun again.
10 Ways to Make Driving Fun Again
Deep Cleaning
Most people know that it’s nicer to drive when their car isn’t full of trash. Still, while you might be staying on top of the general cleanliness of your vehicle, it’s recommended to consider going a little further. Taking your vehicle to a car detailing service can have a transformative impact on your driving experience. They’ll clean parts of your vehicle that you didn’t even know could be cleaned. When you drive away, you’ll have the “new car” feeling. It’s an excellent way to breathe new life into a vehicle that hasn’t been driven often for a year or two.
Take it for a Tune Up
It’s much more fun to drive a car when all the parts are working exactly as they should. Plus, it’s just safer for both you and everyone around you. Modern cars are extremely well made, so [knock on wood] it’s unlikely that you’ll have too many issues that require a visit to the mechanic. However, it’s not just when things break that you should be taking your vehicle to a garage. Make a point of regularly making an appointment for a tune-up, and you’ll notice the difference. Plus, this can also be an effective way to improve your MPG rate, which will mean there’ll be longer amounts of time between visits to the gas pump, which will help to save you money.
Upgrade Your Vehicle
Nothing lasts forever. Your car might have been the best on the street once upon a time, but even with all the love and care in the world, there’ll come a time when it begins to falter. And when that happens, you’re unlikely to have a first-rate driving experience. Rather than waiting until your car simply gives in, it’s best to take a proactive approach. By selling your vehicle at the right moment, you can get as much cash as possible for your asset, which you can then use to buy a new car. And if you are budget minded, you don’t have to spend significant sums of cash to get your hands on the keys to a new car; the second-hand market, for instance, is extremely active at the moment.
Invest in a Sound System
A great sound system can make all the difference to your driving experience. Think of the headphones you use; you just wouldn’t expect to have crystal clear sound if you had a standard-issue set of headphones. Once you pay a little more, you begin to hear the impact. In this day and age, there are plenty of car speakers to choose from, and you can find great options at all price points. If you’re not sure where to start, peruse through a car speaker buying guide to see which options would make sense for your vehicle. By installing great speakers, the change to the listening experience can be as dramatic as going from standard definition to high definition.
Put Together a Driving Playlist
And now that you’ve got a great sound system, it’s time to enjoy it! Putting together a great driving playlist can make even the most mundane journeys a fun adventure. You can find premade driving playlists on all the major streaming platforms, but the best ones are the ones you make yourself. For instance, I like to create a yearly playlist based on the concerts I attended that year. Each listen is a trip down memory lane. So take a deep dive into your favorite music, and look at creating a playlist that sweeps and soars at all the right points.
Alternatively, if you’re not much of a music fan, then you can also take a look at all those outstanding podcasts freely available online. Long road trips are perfect for true crime podcasts! Do this, and you can make your journeys informative, suspenseful, comical, whatever you want them to be.
Find a Fun Route
Many people like driving to new places and adventures. It’s the mundane journeys that they don’t like. It can be challenging to make the same journey every single day, especially if that route usually involves a lot of traffic or is otherwise just uninspiring.
If that sounds like your experience, remember that most destinations have multiple routes to get there. If your current commute to work isn’t doing it for you, then take a look at what other options are available. You might find that there’s a scenic route which, while adding a little bit of time to your journey, is much more enjoyable.
Add Personal Touches
Like driving, but struggling to build a connection with your car? Driving becomes a lot more fun when it feels like we’re driving a car that is very much our own. In that instance, it’s recommended to look at adding some personal touches whenever possible. You could look at DVLA Number plates for sale to get a plate that has personal significance. You may also look into the car aftermarket options available to you, including steering wheel covers, custom lights, or just add a scent that you love. I also love adding vinyl decals and stickers from the places that I visit.
Have a Snack Drawer
Is there anything worse than knowing that you need a little snack and there isn’t a snack or store in the vicinity? Yes, there is — knowing that you need a snack and there IS a store, but you have no time to make a pit stop to buy anything. You can remove this issue by keeping a few snacks in your car. Of course, we’d recommend looking for healthy snacks to keep in your vehicle, such as beef jerky, trail mix and popcorn. Water and sports drinks are great things to keep on hand, as well. Remember, if you notice that you’re growing more annoyed with driving, it might just be that you’re a little hungry. We’re simple creatures when it comes down to it!
Ignore the Bad Drivers
It would be nice if we were the only people on the roads. Can you imagine how fun it would be to have the roads all to yourself? Alas, that’s not a realistic option. Even if you live in a quiet town, you’ll still experience bad drivers from time to time. If you live in an urban area, then bad drivers will just be part of your daily driving experience.
You can’t do anything to stop those drivers. You just have to hope that they learn how to drive at some point. What you can control is your response to those bad drivers. If you’re continually getting annoyed or angry at bad drivers, then you’ll be making your driving experience pretty miserable. The best approach is to simply ignore them. Don’t let their actions ruin your day.
Lower the Costs
There’s no avoiding the fact that it can be expensive to run a car. My dad always said, “If you have a car, you have a headache.” I have to admit, I have agreed with him on many occasions about this. Even if you love driving, you probably won’t like the fact that the privilege of driving is taking up a considerable chunk of your monthly income. Between gas, maintenance, insurance, licensing, storage, etc., driving is not a cheap endeavor. So, naturally, it’s best to look at ways of lowering costs. Shopping around for insurance, carpooling with colleagues, and changing your driving so that you get a better MPG rate can all make a noticeable difference to your bank balance.
