Check out our 7 tips for more effortless trips and see how you can get your adventures back on track.

7 Tips For Effortless Trips

1. The Art of Packing Light

Overpacking can be a bigger problem than under-packing sometimes, so let’s tackle it once and for all. Listen, unless you’re fleeing the country for mysterious reasons, you don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe. I have definitely been guilty of this one myself. But, over the years I have learned how to pack more efficiently. Pack essentials and versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Think of it as a capsule wardrobe for the adventurous. Packing cubes can also help you pack lighter by only allotting a certain amount of packing real estate for certain items. This also helps keep your clothing nice and organized. Remember, every extra pair of shoes you bring is one less souvenir you can take home. Choose wisely!

2. No More Lugging Your Luggage

Have you ever arrived at your destination hours before check-in, or had a long layover with no place to stash your bags? In many cities this problem can easily be solved. Put an end to the “luggage lugging” with luggage storage Florence, France or Florida! Drop off your bags and enjoy exploring hands-free. Your back and shoulders deserve a vacation, too.

3. Digital is the New Black

Paper boarding passes and physical maps? How quaint! In today’s digital age, you can have everything from boarding passes to city guides right on your smartphone. Apps like Google Maps, Citymapper, or TripIt can keep all your travel details organized and at your fingertips. Plus, going digital means fewer things to lose [except maybe your phone, but that’s what pockets with zippers are for]. Take this a step further and go totally free with a cross body bag or a fanny pack.

4. Follow the Locals

Want to really experience a new place? Skip the tourist traps and follow the locals. Use apps like Yelp or TripAdvisor to find where the natives eat, play, and relax. Not only will you save money, but you might also discover some hidden gems that aren’t in your guidebook. Plus, you can avoid huge lines at typical tourist traps, while also exploring how the natives actually live. Remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Nashville, well, you get the idea.

5. Stay Hydrated and Fueled

Travel can be draining, both mentally and physically. Keep hydrated and have snacks handy. Nuts, protein bars, or even good old-fashioned fruit can be lifesavers on long journeys or when the next meal is unknown. Plus, staying hydrated and full helps keep those travel-induced hangry episodes at bay. If you are traveling between countries, just be mindful of what you can take through customs.

6. Learn Basic Phrases

If traveling abroad, learning a few basic phrases in the local language can go a long way. Phrases like, “Please,” “Thank you,” “Where is the bathroom?” and “Two beers, please” can improve your experience. When I visited Japan, I spent the first day on my own, with no interpreter. I needed to use the restroom and could not get this point across. Thank goodness there was a German fellow near me who heard my dilemma and knew enough English to help. This might not always be the case, so I recommend preparing in advance. It’’s not just polite, it a’s also polite and shows respect for the culture and people you are visiting.

7. Keep a Flexible Itinerary

Finally, while it’s great to have a plan, be flexible. Sometimes the best travel experiences come from spontaneous decisions. Missed your train? Maybe you’ll end up exploring a charming little cafe instead. Rain ruined your beach day? Perhaps you’ll discover a fascinating museum or a cozy bookshop nearby. Traveling should be about discovery, relaxation, and making memories, not the day to day drudge, and with these tips in your travel arsenal, you can ensure it is!
