Although summer is long gone and winter is almost upon us, did you know that there is still work to be done on your lawn to help it get through the harsh winter months? Yes, indeed, there is. I will admit that many of the winter lawn care tips that TruGreen has provided for us I was unaware of and have never considered doing during the winter. However, these helpful winter lawn care tips can save your yard and make it look healthy and vibrant in the spring.

Mow Up Until The First Frost

If you mow your yard right up until the first frost, your yard will remain neatly trimmed through the winter months and look spectacular in the spring. This tip is especially important for those of you who live in the northern U.S. states because that area tends to have more wet weather in the winter months, which can lead to the development of snow mold. I had never heard of snow mold, but apparently it is a real thing that can affect lawns, especially ones that have tall grass or grass that has not been mowed properly.

Use Winter Windbreakers

Windbreakers can help protect trees and shrubs from wind damage. It seems to me that trees are more brittle in the winter months and are therefore more prone to wind damage. So, I think this tip is a good idea to protect trees and shrubs.

Rake Your Yard To Remove Leaves And Thatch

Leaves that are left on the lawn can suffocate your lawn and kill out the grass. It is a good idea to rake them up or mulch them with a mulching mower. The mulch can be composted and spread among your plants and shrubbery to help nourish them through the winter. This is also a very green move because it cuts down on landfill waste.

Thatch is a collection of dead plant material that collects between the grass and soil, such as the tops of the grass from previous times the yard was mowed. A buildup of thatch can deprive the grass roots of nutrients and moisture, so a gentle raking (not too aggressive) is recommended to remove this buildup.

Trim And Fertilize Trees And Shrubs

Keep your trees and shrubs fertilized to help them look their best in the spring. Fertilizing helps provide trees and shrubs with important nutrients for the winter months. Trimming them will help them keep their shape and will really make them stand out when you add your holiday lights to them.

Here in North Carolina, lawn care is almost a year-round thing. It does get moderately cold in the winter months, but we do still have several days of warm weather, even in January.
