As you all know, we have one child. Our home has 3 bedrooms. I work from home – so what to do with that extra room should be an easy decision, right? Wrong. It’s pretty small. I think the actuall dimensions of it are 9×9 or something similar. We had it as a home office before but any desk configuration I came up with seemed to suck up the whole room. I just didn’t love it. Enter our hero Staples.
Home Office Ideas For A Small Room
Staples offered to hook me up with some seriously awesome furniture for my office. And this girl is no dummy so I said “YES!” I have been wanting a home office for so long and there are no office experts quite like Staples.
Here is the home “office” {aka place to pile stuff} before. We had painted this room one time when I intended to use it as an office. But, honestly I felt so cramped in there that we quickly stopped using it as an office and it turned into more of a pantry/room to pile stuff.
Here you see patched spots where we are prepping to repaint. Also, be sure to pay attention to the really small window {the only one in the room} and that very over piled shelf in the corner with school supplies. It is leaning back – partly because there was carpet under it and partly because it had WAY too much stuff on it. This is now all remedied. Oh, and there was some epic horrific-ness going on with that carpet. The hubs tore that mess up and now there is nice new tile.
Home Office Ideas: Try An L-Desk In A Small Home Office
If you have a small office but need a lot of work space, I highly recommend the Sauder August Hill L-Desk in Oak. I chose this desk because I like a lot of work space but I don’t want a massive desk. The desk I had before was a traditional teacher type desk which had a large work surface but I couldn’t reach half of it comfortably anyway. So, it took up a lot of room, without really being helpful.
The Sauder August Hill L-Desk works great because you can put it in a corner or you can have one side to the wall. Personally, I didn’t want to be in the corner and I dislike my back to the door, so that is why we chose this placement for the desk. Also, the l-desk gives you a lot of usable work space, both in front of you and beside you. I like this because I can look at my calendar and use my laptop without moving anything.
This l-desk also comes with a drawer that holds hanging files! Yay! Now there is no need for a filing cabinet which saves more room. You also get a shelf under the desk so that you can hide everything underneath, leaving your work space free for the stuff you need now. You can also hide your cords with this desk if you like, but I move my laptop from room to room so I just leave it showing so it’s easier to move. If I get a desktop, I am totally hiding the cords.
Home Office Ideas: Save Room With A Tech Pier
In my old office configuration, we had the printer on the desk. The desk was massive, so it didn’t impede my work space, but it didn’t look very nice. So, we chose the Sauder August Hill Technology Pier. The tech pier is great because you can have all of your printer needs in one space. We put the printer on top and extra paper in one of the drawers. There are two drawers and two shelves, so I am sure you can find something to do with all of that space.
No Office Is Complete Without Organization
Some people use excel and online calendars. I use paper. I am definitely a visual person and I need my plans right in front of me. To keep track of money coming in and out, I picked up the Quartet 4 Month Dry Erase Planner Board. The one on Staples’ website looks a smidge different than the one I picked up in stores, but it’s basically the same thing.
I also chose some Quartet Natural Cork Tiles. If you need a cork board but don’t want to have a massive board on your walls, these are a great compromise. Plus, they are really inexpensive. I used 3 under my dry erase calendar for post it notes and then put 3 down the side of my tall shelf to hand my press badges on. My daughter whined for the rest. You parents know how that goes. 😉
Home Office Ideas: Make It Your Own
I had this cool old bookshelf that I really wanted to use in here, but I wanted some crates so that I could use it for art supply organization. So, I used some crates that we painted and Mason Jars to separate and organize all of our art supplies. A lot of the supplies came off of the tall shelf, so that cleared it up a bit, too.
We also used the sea shell lamps that we found at a yard sale and rehabilitated to give the office that beachy feel that the rest of our home has. Nothing inspires me more than feeling like I am on vacation.
We hope you liked our home office ideas for a small space. Please let us know if you have any other suggestions.
