The Perils Of Flip Flops #RockYourBlog

Flip Flops ~

I used to prefer flip flops over sandals any day. Lately, I have been wearing sandals much more. I like them better because they actually hold the shoe on my foot and I don’t have to worry about it sliding off. Sadly, I recently lost my favorite pair of sandals in the dreadful camping experience you may have read about. When we were walking to go set up the tent, my friend stepped on the back of my sandal and the strap broke. Of course, that was just the highlight of the whole night.

Flip Flops and Doors Don’t Mix

Either way, both flip flops and sandals can be highly dangerous. I can tell you readers get a kick out of my many mishaps. 😉 So, I must now share yet another one of my many horrid experiences with you. In second grade, I decided to wear flip flops to school. In the middle of class, I raised my hand and asked if I could go to the bathroom (a trick many students use to get out of class). As I was walking around in the bathroom wasting time, I decided that I should probably head back to class.

As I went to walk out of the door, please keep in mind that my school was very old and contained the old heavy wooden doors. So, as I went to open the door, I felt an immense amount of pain. Being the trooper that I was, I didn’t want anyone to see me cry because I didn’t want to seem like a baby. So, I kept walking and suddenly I decided to look down.

And that is when I noticed the blood pouring out of my flip flop.

I suddenly felt a flood of fear and burst out crying {aka an ear piercing, shrill scream of terror}! Suddenly, many teachers came out of their classrooms and rushed to my aid. Before I knew it, I found myself waiting restlessly in the ER for medical attention. When I finally saw the doctor, he showed me the cut that went horizontally along the crease of the bottom of one toe.  My immediate worry was that he was going to give me stitches. Some of the inside of my toe was hanging out! *gasp*Thankfully, he said that stitches weren’t needed because feet sweat and putting stitches in a crease of a toe would be useless. So, he wrapped my toe up and sent me on my way. The one good thing that came out of all of this was that I didn’t have to participate in gym for some time!

Flip Flops Catastrophe #2: Dislocated Toe

A few years later, at around age 12 or 13, I was wearing flip flops to school again. I was walking down the hallway on my way to the bus and some friends and I were playing around.  I started to move my foot right as one of my friends stepped on my foot and I felt this horrendous pain. I looked down and my toe was sticking out to the side. I didn’t have a picture of the first accident, but I do have a grainy cell phone shot of this one…

Dislocated Pinky Toe

Anyway, a poor, defenseless toe doesn’t stand a chance around me.

  • I haven't worn flip flops in years (we used to call them "thongs"). But I once injured my toe at school, and I was wearing regular shoes. I hit my toe on the door so hard that it bled through my sock. But yes, it's always good to get out of gym!

    • So you were wearing sneakers? Wow! You must have hit that thing pretty hard to hurt it that bad! Ouch! So, was it injured bad?

      • Of course, this was over 20 years ago, so it's hard to remember exactly. I wasn't wearing sneakers, I don't think. I usually wore moccasin-style shoes. I don't remember hitting it extremely hard. In fact, I think someone opened the door hard (it was an old door), and my foot was in the way. I remember the absolute pain I felt, but like you, I didn't want anyone to know. I believe I was on my way to U.S. history. At some point, I decided to take my shoe off and take a look at my toe. It was really hurting. And when I saw the blood soaked through my sock, I really was pretty upset. I didn't have to go to the doctor or anything, but I remember that it hurt a lot! I didn't actually take care of cleaning it or anything till I got home from school.

  • I've never found flip flops comfortable or attractive. I'm sorry that your foot got messed up. I did have a foot injury that required surgery. Now my toe is fused and I can only wear flats. To top it off I developed gangreen! (spelling) boy did that hurt!

      • Yes. They cut the bad area out. It hurt like heck for a while. You're daughter should write a book about her adventures. I enjoy reading her reviews. Well all of them. Some of hers just crack me up. Takes me back to when I was her age.

  • This is exactly why I usually wll not wear flip flops. I broke my toe once. It was very painful.

    • Oh my gosh! I bet it was! What do they do for a broken toe? Do you get a cast or do they tape it to the next one and send you on your way?

      • No they did not cast it, but heavily taped several toes together and sent me on my way.

  • Oh gosh I remember wearing the cheapest of cheap flip flops and riding a bike....such a bad idea! I scrapped all the skin off the tips of my toes. I also broke my foot wearing flip flops so I do agree they are dangerous...lol.

  • That looks so painful.
Yes, I tore/lifted straight back on the nail bed, my big toes nail. Came completely off. I never want to do that again. If I even think I'll be around tons of people I wear close toed shoes.

    • Oh gosh! That sounds horrible! I have had pieces torn off of nails, but never the whole thing....Amber said that she had her entire pinky nail torn off while skating one time. She fell and someone ran over her hand. Ouch!

  • Yes, but not because of flip flops. It's because I'm clumsy and I catch it on the side of a piece of furniture!

  • Ouch! My foot injuries have been confined to stepping on things while barefoot (legos are the worst!), and I generally wear closed toed shoes.

  • Oh my! I wear flip flops almost every day... even in the winter. Here is CA it doesn't get that cold often. I did have one time when I was little and my uncle took me to the mall... I had flip flops on and they got stuck in the escalator. I'm still paranoid about my kids being on one and jumping off at the end!

    • Oh my! I always worry about that, but fortunately that has never happened to me. Escalators can be tricky!

      • omgosh yes, escalators can be tricky but I'm hardly around one... I do all my shopping online!

  • Ahhh... the perils. But not if you are a true beach bum and live at the beach! Flip Flop wearing is an art! I will write about it on my blog and come back here with a link to the article. I have so many pairs of flip flops of different styles and colors! I live in my flip flops! But if you live at the beach (like me and my husband) you are wearing them around the house, at the beach, and everywhere else. I don't work (disability) and so that is pretty much anytime that I'm not in bed or in the shower! I'm addicted to them. :) Carolyn
