Betty White “If You Ask Me {And Of Course You Won’t}” ~ Book Review #2012readingchallenge

*I started this book last night about 12:10am and did not stop until it was finished (around 3am). For the girl who gets 100 pages into a book and moves on to another one a lot, that says a lot!

Ah, what to say about Betty White that hasn’t already been said? Anyone who knows me knows that I love this lady. I grew up watching her, as most of us have, but I especially loved her in “Golden Girls” and “Mama’s Family.” “Golden Girls” is one of my favorite shows of all time and I watch it almost every time I see it on and can. And now I absolutely love “Hot In Cleveland.” I am so glad I have satellite.

As of the writing of this book, Betty White has penned 6 books. This is the 2nd that I have read. I had no idea she had written so many books but I will get to reading them eventually I am sure. This book is not a difficult read (in fact, it’s really easy) and most of the chapters are really short (like 1 or 2 pages) so if you are scared of reading a gigantic book or if you just came off of a crazy long book like I just did (I just finished “11/22/63” by Stephen King), then this just might be the book for you. This book is also full of pictures which I just love looking at! I wish more autobiographies were like this. Most seem to have either no pictures, or pictures in clumps (and not many, at that).

**SPOILER** This book is mostly a reflection of her thoughts on different aspects of life and she throws in several funny quips. I thought it got a little depressing at the end, with her life reflection and talking about her eventual death. I don’t think that she wrote it in a depressing way. Betty White actually seems to have quite a healthy attitude toward it. It was just depressing to think about for me.

I especially loved the parts about George Clooney, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sandra Bullock, Carl Reiner, handwriting, and her love of pets (which I will assume is addressed in all her books, because if memory serves me correctly, if was a strong theme in the other book of hers that I read). I love animals, too, so I have a strong respect for all the work that she has done to help take care of our furry friends. Mostly though, the book is sentimental and funny. I would have given it 4.5 stars, but that isn’t an option on Goodreads, so I am giving it 5.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes biographies. I would also recommend this book to anyone else, for that matter. I am extremely biased where Betty White is concerned, for those who don’t already know that. 🙂 And for all these Hollywood women who cry that there are no good parts for women over a certain age…there are if you are Betty White. 😉

In a somewhat unrelated note – I particularly love TVLand. “Hot in Cleveland” was their 1st original program (according to the Betty White book) and I am really glad they are giving parts to awesome actors who snotty local networks might pass on because they aren’t reality mess. “Hot in Cleveland” is brilliant and, besides loving Betty’s character “Elka,” I also love Wendie Malick’s character, “Victoria.” I have always thought she was hilarious, although all of the actresses and actors involved are great. If you haven’t seen this show, you really should.
