I’ve never been to the country of Iceland. I think the closest I have actually ever been to the Nordic island would be Canada [I visited there once as a teen and I flew over Canada on my way to Japan earlier this year]. I do, however, know a person who lived there about 15 or 20 years ago. I think her husband was stationed there while in the military and I remember her telling me how beautiful it was in Iceland. And, no, it’s not cold all the time as the name “Ice” land might suggest. Anyway, I would love to visit Iceland one day and there are some very specific things that I would like to see and do while there. Here is my Iceland Travel Bucket List.

7 Things On My Iceland Travel Bucket List

1. Scenic Tour of the Highlands – Did you know that you can hike through Landmannalaugar? You can also take Jeep tours through much of the rest of the Highlands. I would definitely enjoy trying out different excursions into the Highlands. That is so my travel style so, naturally, I will be sure to do one of these, particularly the Jeep tour, should I one day get to visit Iceland.

2. Lake Myvatn – The volcanic island of Dominica, located in the Caribbean, is lush with plant life, covered in rain forest and black sand and absolutely breathtaking to see. I wasn’t like, “Oh yeah, I gotta see this,” before I went there, but by the time I left, the tiny island had stolen my heart. I have longed desperately to go back since. I think this is what Lake Myvatn will make me feel like, too. This 2,000 year old body of fresh water is surrounded by land covered in craters, curious rock formations, sulphur springs and bubbling mud pools, things you just can’t see everywhere. To me, it sounds simply magical.

3. Sólheimasandur – Word on the street is that the farmer who owns Sólheimasandur doesn’t want visitors, yet it’s a hugely popular tourist destination anyway. Dierks Bentley shot part of his music video for “Black” there and, honestly, the combination of this farmer not wanting me there and Dierks flying all the way there just to shoot a music video makes me feel like I need to see this place. I’m pretty cool. This farmer just doesn’t know it yet. This review of Dierks {no, it’s not “Jerks” Bentley] Bentley’s “Black” is hilarious, by the way. Definitely read it.

4. Whale Watching Tour – I have been on a dolphin cruise in the Outer Banks before and loved it! But I can’t recall ever seeing a whale. So, a Whale Watching Tour in Iceland sounds like just the ticket. I am really into anything where I can sightsee or check out animals. And I really love tours that have a host who narrates and shares information about the place I am visiting. This particular tour that I am checking out is in Reykjavik and they say that you might also see “harbor porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales and humpbacks.” Maybe I could also see a puffin! I think all I need in life right now is to see a puffin. Awwww… I am all about this.

5. National Museum – I am such a fan of a good museum. With a massive collection spanning from 1600 to present, The National Museum in Iceland features a plethora of information about Iceland’s past, including it’s Viking history. You can also use the free audio guide with your smart phone so it’s like having your own personal tour guide. The museum, located in Reykjavík, offers free guided tours in English during the peak season. Oh, and who doesn’t want to see a statue of Thor? ;)

6. Vik Beach – As I stated earlier in this article, Dominica has beautiful, black sand beaches. Grenada does, as well. I have visited islands and beaches with varying degrees of white sand before, and Grand Cayman even has a pink sand beach. But I had never seen black sand until visiting Dominica and Grenada. Vik Beach [Reynisfjara] is one of the black sand beaches in Iceland that is the product of one of over 130 volcanoes on the island. If you have never seen a black sand beach before, you are missing out. Trust.

7. Northern Lights – Oh wow! Who isn’t aware of the Northern Lights [Aurora Borealis]? I really don’t think a trip to Iceland would be complete without seeing the Northern Lights. Am I right? Visible between September and April, you have 8 months of chances to see one of the most beautiful light shows that Mother Nature has to offer. You can view the Northern Lights from several destinations in the world, but many of these other places also have more cloud coverage than Iceland, making it more of a challenge to see the phenomenon. It sounds like Iceland is the place to be to me.

What Is On Your Iceland Travel Bucket List?

Have you been to Iceland before? If so, what did you see? What do you recommend that I add to my Iceland Travel Bucket List? I am sure I have left some awesome things out so be sure to let me know what I missed.
