Springtime is here! And, for us in the south, it means cherry blossoms, flip flops and a new southern favorite: the half-tea, half lemonade drink known as an Arnold Palmer, named after the golfing legend himself. Now, if you have never tried an Arnold Palmer, then you don’t know what you are missing! But, if you are going to make one, it’s best to use something other than sugar. That much sugar is just not good for you! However, there is a great alternative to sugar that is also becoming a southern favorite. It’s Splenda® no calorie sweetener.
Splenda® has all the taste of sugar without all the added calories! We use Splenda® in several recipes around our house, but the Arnold Palmer is one of our absolute favorites! It tastes so good, and it won’t add extra calories that can lead to extra fat. If you are looking for a healthier alternative to sugar, might we suggest Splenda no calorie sweetener to you.
Arnold Palmer Recipe
To make two gallons of an Arnold Palmer is fairly simple and requires only a minimum of ingredients. It’s a fancy drink that will impress your house guests but won’t cost you a ton to make.
Ingredients:
3 cups of Splenda® granulated no calorie sweetener {equally divided into 1.5 cups}*
3 family sized tea bags
1.5 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice {use fresh lemons for a better flavor}
2 whole lemons {for garnish}
*You can add more or less Splenda® to your taste preference.
To Prepare The Southern Sweet Tea:
Now, let’s get started by brewing the tea. Place the three family sized tea bags into 2.5 quarts of water in an appropriately sized saucepan and place on the stove on medium high heat. Allow it to come to a rolling boil. Once the tea is boiling, remove from the stove and pour the tea and 1.5 cups Splenda® into a gallon jug. Add just enough cold water to finish filling the jug, stirring while adding the cold water. It is very important to stir the tea while it is still hot to get the Splenda® to mix evenly throughout the tea.
Now, let’s stop for a minute. If you are not a big fan of lemonade, then what you have just created up to this point is typical southern sweet tea. You could skip the next step if you like and just have yourself a nice gallon of sweet tea.
To Prepare The Lemonade:
However, we are making an Arnold Palmer, so we will move forward with the lemonade. Simply mix 1.5 cups of Splenda® with the 1.5 cups of lemon juice in another gallon jug. Add cold water and stir constantly. Now you have lemonade!
Mix It Up And Get An Arnold Palmer!
Now just combine both gallon jugs into a two gallon container, slice the whole lemons into circles and add to the top of your mixture for added flavor. Now you have an Arnold Palmer! Allow it to chill in the refrigerator overnight to allow the flavors to blend and it makes a delicious southern treat!
Did you know that swapping one cup of sugar for one cup of Splenda® can save you more than 600 calories a day?

Being a northerner, I never would have known what an Arnold Palmer was. LOL. By the way, who is Arnold Palmer?
Jay Crawford says
Arnold Palmer was, at one time, the best golfer on the PGA Tour. He won several tournaments in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Dawn McAlexander says
Isn’t he also the creator of this drink, Jay? Or did he just like it a lot?
Gabriel says
I’ve often wondered that myself. I like them as well, although I just do lemon juice, not lemonade. I’m trying to break myself of my sweet tooth.
Jay Crawford says
Dawn, according to Wikipedia, Arnold Palmer started drinking iced tea with lemonade at home. He went to a bar during the U.S. Open in the 1960s and ordered the drink. A nearby woman overheard and ordered it herself, calling it the “Palmer drink.” That’s where the name comes from.
Dawn McAlexander says
Thanks Jay! That is pretty cool that one guy ordering a drink became such a big thing. 🙂
