Crush ~

NKOTB New Kids on the Block

I listen to my teen daughter talk ramble on and on about who she thinks is cute {Robert Pattinson, Robert Pattinson, and did I mention Robert Pattinson?} and it got me thinking back to who I thought was cute when I was a teen. Off the top of my head, I can recall a few that I still think are cute – Joe Elliott {Def Leppard}, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tim McGraw, Gary Sinise and Jason Priestley {yes, I think I have mentioned on this blog approximately 5 bajillion times about how much I loved {and still love} Beverly Hills 90210. However, there are also some crushes that I had as a teen that make me look back and think, “What was I thinking?”

Most Embarassing Teen Crush: NKOTB

Just as the teens of today swoon for One Direction {I see some embarrassment in these crushers’ futures} and the teens of a few years ago were crushing on NSYNC {nice call, ladies}, the teens of my generation were in love with New Kids On The Block. Yes, I know that they started touring with Backstreet Boys a few years ago and the fans came out in droves, but I just can’t make myself feel good about this past infatuation. Yes, most of these guys are still very nice to look at, but their song lyrics and weird dance moves just don’t do it for me. Remember:

Singing groups + incessant lyrics reminding us of your group’s name {“We’re the new kids on the block…”} = recipe for later humiliation.

I think my favorite songs by them as a teen were “The Right Stuff” and “I’ll Be Loving Your Forever.” Now, “The Right Stuff” is tolerable but “I’ll Be Loving You Forever” makes me think of nails screeching slowly down a chalkboard. I sincerely hope that dude has hit puberty since the release of that song.

Bret Michaels, Poison Rock Of Love teen crushes

Bret Michaels in Rock Of Love

Too Many Hair Bands To Name {Mainly Bret Michaels}

Ugh. Hair bands. Yes, some are still around, still rockin’, and still good {Bon Jovi, Def Leppard}. And then there are some that suck to the max. Okay, pretty much all of them suck to the max now. I guess the one that embarrasses me most is Bret Michaels. What an idiot. Like many 80s chics, I was pinned to my TV hoping he would find his “Rock Of Love.” Then I see commercials for a reality TV series starring him and his entire family a year or so ago, including some chic he has been with FOR YEARS. What!!? Where was she during “Rock of Love” when he kept crying how he couldn’t find anyone? Where was she when the stage lights went down to give the impression {probably fact} that Bret Michaels had bedded basically everyone on that show. Gross.

Poison is great in concert. Their music is still some of my favorite. But as for Bret Michaels himself? No thanks.

P.S. What’s with the pouty lip thing?

Robert Duvall Lonesome Dove teen crushes

Robert Duvall and Sean Connery

Yeah, there is a year or two difference here. ;) But the heart wants what the heart wants. Okay, I will say that I am embarrassed by this but let’s be honest, I’m really not. Anyone here see “Lonesome Dove?” If so, Mr. Duvall would look rather appealing to you, too. Or ANYTHING with Sean Connery? You’d love him, too. Trust.

Do You Have A Teen Crush To Share That You Are Now Embarrassed About?

  1. I made a point of not having teenage crushes, just because everyone around me seemed to be crazy about one thing or the other. It is all about the pouty lip thing though – LOL

I could watch him selling insurance and oh that voice. He could read me grocery lists and I’d be a puddle in the floor.

  18. Haha, you are too funny! I still love my hair bands…but for the music (which I still enjoy) not so much the rockers anymore. You are right, they are kind of embarrassing now!
So if we are admitting crushes… mine has to be Robert Downey Jr., even though he is way older than me, I’d take him any day!

  21. I’m not so much embarrassed by this one but more by the fact that I thought he was a good actor. Hahaha!!! But I loved Tommy Howell when I was in Junior High. I know, some are probably wondering who that is nowadays (The Outsiders, Red Dawn and The Hitcher). I still love to watch him when he pops up in a LMN channel movie.

My first ever crush, when I was about 5 or so, was Shaun Cassidy. But no embarrassment here. I wear that one proudly! He was so cute back then and hey, what a fun crush to have as your first.

  22. Maria Iemma says:

Gosh, I am older and my crush was Elvis – he could do no wrong and still can’t. I remember the day he died…I cried for hours.
