Protect your electronic equipment, TV, home cinema and PC – by getting accidental damage coverage

When you’re looking for contents insurance quotes, it’s worth remembering that if one of your gadgets does get accidentally damaged, you’ll want to make sure the level of cover will help protect it – either by getting it fixed or replacing the item.
While some insurance policies expect you to pay extra for the option of accidental cover, there are those that include it as standard – so make sure you check.
What does accidental damage cover?
Accidental damage is usually designed to insure your possessions against damage, such as spillages and breakages in the home that are not expected or deliberate.
In terms of electronic equipment, this will usually include your TV, DVD and audio equipment, plus your games console and PC. It may also cover your tablet or iPad – again, when you’re looking for contents and home insurance, just check that this is the case.
Caring for your gadgets
Of course, there are things you can do to look after your electronic devices, so that they continue to give you the best entertainment possible.
When it comes to your TV or games console, make sure they are stored on or in a sturdy unit, which can properly and safely support their weight. The same goes for your DVD and audio equipment – and remember to make sure that there is plenty of ventilation around the items, as they could overheat.
With things like your tablet or laptop, it’s about being mindful about where you leave them. The fact that you can use them anywhere, any time is great – but if you leave them under a cushion on the sofa, for example, they are bound to get damaged if they’re sat on. So perhaps invest in a case, and make sure you get into the habit of putting them away when not in use.
At the end of the day…
Accidents do happen. So it’s worth looking for a suitable level of contents insurance to fit with you and your lifestyle.

We had accidental coverage for our laptop, and I was very grateful knowing that if my kids happened to do something to it, or spilled water or juice on it, I would be safe and my computer could be repaired or replaced. When my job depends on having a working laptop this provided a huge lift in worry. I need to get more coverage for our TV and my new camera now.

This is up there with renters insurance, something you do not think about until you need it. I learned the hard way and now have accidental damage coverage on all high end items.
